Mother’s Heartbreaking Plea: “Avoid Drugs or Face Devastating Consequences”

A grieving mother, Melesi Ratoto, is urging the public to steer clear of drugs following the tragic passing of her 26-year-old son, Ratunaisa Noeh Bill Vatunaruku, due to complications from severe substance abuse just two weeks ago. Ms. Ratoto laid her son to rest in Votualevu, Nadi, last Wednesday.

In her heartfelt plea, Ms. Ratoto is determined to raise awareness about the dangers of illicit drugs, hoping to prevent others from experiencing the same heartbreak. Medical professionals informed her that her son’s excessive drug use had severely harmed his internal organs, including his kidneys and liver.

“Before you find yourself trapped with no way out like my son, please flee from drugs and avoid the places or friends that lead to death,” she implored, her emotional burden evident.

Despite pouring love and guidance into her son’s life, Ms. Ratoto reflects on the challenges she faced as a single mother since her husband’s death two years ago. She describes her son as a persistent test of her love and patience, expressing guilt and confusion over his turn to drugs and criminal activities.

Ms. Ratoto recounted alarming behaviors exhibited by her son as he struggled with addiction, including episodes of disorientation and extended sleep. The situation escalated to the point where she had to summon the police when his actions became concerning.

The anguish peaked when he fell critically ill, prompting a desperate rush to the hospital, where she could hardly recognize him. “Losing a son to drugs is an unimaginable pain,” she said, highlighting her wish that her experience might serve as a warning to the youth.

The funeral service sought to raise awareness among parents about the responsibility of safeguarding their children from the perils of drug use. In a related discussion, Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran revealed that eight wheelbarrow boys in Nadi reportedly died from drug overdoses this year. The Ministry plans to consult and provide training focused on de-addiction and financial literacy for those affected.

Dr. Luisa Cikamatana, the chief medical advisor for the Ministry of Health, acknowledged the stark reality of substance abuse in Fiji, emphasizing the health risks associated with drug use, including the introduction of harmful toxins into the bloodstream. She raised concerns about rising cases of HIV and other infectious diseases linked to drug activities, stressing the need for comprehensive strategies to combat the drug problem in the community.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports is also committed to assisting vulnerable youth in finding a better and more sustainable lifestyle.
