Mother Seeks Justice After Son’s On-Duty Tragedy at EFL

A mother is seeking answers from her son’s employer after he tragically died on a job site in Suva. Anit Anitesh Ram, a Vunivau resident and employee of Energy Fiji Limited (EFL), reportedly suffered a fatal electric shock while on duty on Tuesday.

His mother, Puspha Wati, received a call from EFL at 9:22 AM informing her that Ram had been taken to Oceania Hospital following the incident. The Ram family is mourning the loss of their only source of income.

“I quickly tried to arrange a flight from Labasa to Suva to see how Anit was doing, but after an hour, I got a call from my relatives telling me he had passed away,” Ms. Wati recounted. She attempted to contact her son’s supervisor multiple times but was unable to reach anyone and received no communication from EFL regarding the tragedy.

She expressed her belief that her son would never have acted recklessly at work and demanded answers from EFL. “Usually, EFL is prompt in sending out advisory messages about power outages, including one on the day my son died that curtailed a Parliament session in Suva. However, when it comes to informing families about the loss of their staff, they seem to hold back,” she said.

An email sent to EFL for comment on the incident had not received a reply by the time of this report. Ms. Wati revealed that Ram had joined EFL in November of the previous year and had sought a transfer to be nearer to his family.

“My husband and I are unwell, and recently Anit reassured us that we need not worry about anything as he would come back soon,” the 45-year-old mother shared. Ram had celebrated his 26th birthday on August 11, and during their last conversation the day before his death, he expressed excitement about participating in the Labasa Sanatan soccer tournament.

“We spent so many years raising him for a good life so he could care for us in our old age, but now we have lost everything,” she lamented.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro stated that the victim was found motionless and is believed to have been electrocuted, but the police will await post-mortem results to confirm the cause of death.
