The tournament kicked off yesterday with professionals playing 36 holes, while the women’s and amateur divisions will tackle 18 holes today. Fiji Golf president Amitesh Chandra highlighted the event’s significance, noting, “The professionals are vying for $10,000 in prize money, with the winner receiving $1,800.”
Defending champion and Fiji PGA Order of Merit leader Tomasi Tuivuna is seen as the frontrunner, but he is likely to encounter tough competition from Roneel Prakash and Vikrant Chandra, who are currently ranked second and third, respectively. Last week’s Denarau Pro-Am winner, Abid Hussein, is also expected to contend for the title.
In the women’s competition, Riana Kumar, the top-ranked player in Fiji, is the favorite to secure victory. The men’s amateur division is set to be competitive, despite the absence of Shakil Pillay, who is in Japan preparing for the NEC Master of Amateurs Golf Championship in Melbourne next January.
With around 100 participants registered, the tournament promises to deliver an exciting day of golf at Denarau.
