Two tragic vehicular accidents took place early yesterday morning in the Western Division, resulting in the loss of two lives. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana reported that both incidents unfolded in Lautoka.
The first accident occurred shortly after midnight, claiming the life of a 38-year-old man. According to reports, the driver was en route along Barara Flat towards Nadi when he reportedly lost control of his vehicle, leading it off the road. The driver and three passengers were quickly transported to Lautoka Hospital, but unfortunately, the driver succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. Two of the passengers are currently hospitalized in stable condition, while the third has been discharged.
The second incident, described as a hit-and-run, happened after 3 a.m. along Drasa Avenue. A 26-year-old man was discovered by a passerby who promptly took him to Lautoka Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana indicated that traffic investigators are actively working to identify the vehicle involved in this incident.
In a separate but serious incident, a 22-year-old man sustained significant injuries this morning in Wailada, Lami, after the vehicle he was driving collided with a stationary truck trailer. He was subsequently transported to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he remains under care.
Despite these tragedies, SSP Divuana highlighted that the current road death toll stands at 50, an improvement compared to 71 during the same period last year. This statistic offers a glimmer of hope as ongoing awareness and safety measures may be making a difference in reducing road fatalities.
The investigations into both accidents are still ongoing, with a concentrated effort to gather details that could lead to further clarity and accountability. As the local community grapples with these recent losses, it serves as a poignant reminder about the importance of road safety for everyone.
