Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the permanent secretary for Health and Medical Services, has brought attention to the alarming issue of overcrowding in morgues, which is not only a challenge in the Western Division but is also being experienced in Suva. This situation often occurs due to a spike in deaths, family delays in burial planning, and technical issues within morgue units.

Dr. Tudravu detailed that during peak periods, families might need to move their departed loved ones to alternative facilities, such as those located in Nadi, while awaiting burial arrangements. He underscored the necessity for reliable morgue services across different areas, not just in public facilities, but also in privately managed establishments, including the CWM Hospital in Suva and those in Lautoka.

The issue of crowded morgues is not unprecedented; previous reports have highlighted similar difficulties faced by the Savusavu hospital due to a malfunctioning morgue, which severely limited its capacity. This situation has placed added emotional burdens on families, who must shoulder the responsibility of transporting their deceased relatives to more distant locations.

Addressing the need for adequate funeral facilities has become a focal point of discussion within Fijian society as stakeholders consider solutions to avoid recurring problems. There is a growing call for cooperation between the Ministry of Health and community organizations to ensure that necessary resources and infrastructure are in place. Improving these systems not only helps alleviate the logistical issues families face during difficult times but also promotes a more compassionate approach to handling the challenges tied to mortality. The hope for the future lies in strengthened collaborative efforts that prioritize the dignified treatment of the deceased and support for grieving families.
