The Savusavu hospital morgue is currently facing operational challenges, with six of its units out of service. This malfunction has led to a significant reduction in capacity, allowing only three bodies to be accommodated in the morgue since last week.

Avikash Pillay, the president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce and Industries and chairperson of the Savusavu Sub-divisional Hospital Board of Visitors, provided this update. He highlighted the emotional and financial burden on families when the morgue reaches its full capacity. In such cases, relatives must arrange their own transportation to the Labasa Hospital mortuary, with the estimated cost of a return trip reaching around $200. Additionally, families face another $200 to transport the casket to the funeral location.

Pillay expressed concern over the existing lack of facilities and revealed that a meeting with hospital stakeholders is scheduled for Thursday to address the issue. The Ministry of Health is expected to release a statement regarding the situation later today.

This circumstance underscores the importance of reliable funeral facilities and the need for investments in local healthcare infrastructure to better support families during their time of need. It is hoped that the upcoming discussions will lead to a swift resolution and improvements in services for the community.
