Montoya’s Move: Former Kiwi Star Returns to Aussie Roots

Former Fiji Bati player Marcelo Montoya is set to leave the New Zealand Warriors and return to Australia. The 28-year-old has received an early release from his contract, which was scheduled to expire at the end of next season.

Warriors general manager of recruitment, pathways, and development Andrew McFadden expressed his support for Montoya’s decision, stating that while the club was pleased for him to complete his contract, they are glad he has secured a new opportunity in Australia that offers him longer-term stability. McFadden also praised Montoya’s significant contributions both on and off the field during his four-year tenure with the club.

Montoya is anticipated to reunite with his former team, the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs, on a two-year deal. During his time with the Warriors, he scored 30 tries across 82 appearances, including playing all 27 games in the 2023 season.
