Monish Kumar, 23, is shaping a distinctive path in Fiji’s vibrant music scene, balancing a budding career with a strong educational foundation and a deep sense of cultural pride. Residing on Farm Road in Nakasi, his roots trace back to Waiqele, Nabekavu in Labasa, where a close-knit family fostered his love for singing from a young age.
“I started singing at the age of 10, and my father, Manoj Kumar, who is also my guru, has always been my biggest inspiration and supporter,” Monish said, highlighting the familial mentorship that anchors his musical journey. He also credits his uncle Sanjeet Kumar for encouragement, illustrating how family ties have continually propelled him forward.
Monish’s stage presence first blossomed during primary school, with Narere Primary School serving as an early launching pad. That spark propelled him beyond Fiji, taking him to New Zealand for kirtan performances, and since then he has performed in more than 50 kirtan stage shows across Fiji, from weddings to funeral rites and other religious observances.
His repertoire spans devotional and cultural genres, including kirtans, bhajans, Lokgeets, ghazals, sufi songs, and Bollywood hits. “Music is not just a hobby but a spiritual calling for me,” he explained, describing how his devotional songs connect him to something greater and give his life purpose.
Beyond singing, Monish is a skilled instrumentalist, specializing in hudda-tasa, commonly played at weddings, and the dafla, a drum used in pooja ceremonies. These traditional instruments enrich his vocal performances and add a meaningful layer to every event he participates in.
Education has also played a central role in his life. After attending Nabekavu Primary School, he completed secondary studies at Bhawani Dayal Arya College in Nakasi. He then pursued automotive engineering at Fiji National University’s Samabula Derrick Campus, underscoring his commitment to a stable career alongside his musical passion. “Education was important to me and my family. I wanted to have a career where I could support myself and my dreams,” he recalled. Though engineering opened doors, he never wanted to lose touch with his music.
Today, Monish works as a truck driver for Viti Fresh and leverages his sales and marketing know-how to manage and promote his musical projects. Juggling work, studies, and music isn’t easy, but he approaches it with discipline and genuine enthusiasm. “My biggest challenge has been managing my time—taking time off work to perform and rehearse, and building a strong bond with my fellow musicians in the Radhe Radhe Bhakti Boys Group,” he noted. “It’s a constant balancing act, but music brings me joy and keeps me motivated.” He credits teamwork and dedication as crucial to the group’s growth, describing it as more than just music—a message and a feeling shared with audiences.
Looking ahead, Monish aspires to become a professional musician and a standout performer at events across Fiji and beyond. His vision goes beyond personal success; he sees music as a unifying force that can foster change in society. “Music is deeply spiritual. It has the power to bring people together, to heal, and to transform lives. It doesn’t discriminate; it connects people of all races and backgrounds,” he said, reflecting a universal message that underpins his craft.
Monish’s story exemplifies perseverance and the importance of cultural roots. From Nabekavu’s quiet streets to stages across Fiji and New Zealand, his journey embodies a commitment to honor tradition while embracing new opportunities. “My father always told me, ‘Stay true to your music and your values,’ and that has guided me every step of the way. I want to keep spreading joy, faith, and hope through my songs, wherever life takes me,” he shared.
With his vocal talent, instrumental skills, and steadfast dedication, Monish Kumar is well-positioned to leave a lasting imprint on Fiji’s music landscape and to inspire others to pursue their dreams while staying grounded in heritage.
Summary: A 23-year-old Nakasi-based musician and engineer-hopeful, Monish Kumar blends devotional music with modern work life, mentoring from family, and a mission to unite communities through performance.
