Monica Ting is a remarkable young woman dedicated to the well-being of others, despite her own challenges. At just 22 years old, she has not only completed her studies at the University of the South Pacific but has also undergone a transformative journey of self-discovery.
Raised in a large family of ten children, Monica hails from Cakaudrove, with her mother’s roots in Salia and her father’s connections to both Buca Village and Guangzhou, China. Her father’s diligent work as a farmer and her mother’s supportive role as a homemaker have greatly influenced her life.
Monica recalls a childhood filled with motivation from her father, who encouraged competition among his children by promising to take the top student on a trip to Suva. This early experience instilled a strong work ethic in her, leading her to excel academically.
After completing her secondary education at St Johns College in Cawaci, Ovalau, Monica faced a decision between pursuing a Bachelor of Medicine at Fiji National University and a Bachelor of Science at USP. While awaiting a response from FNU, she chose to enroll at USP, demonstrating her ability to adapt when faced with uncertainty.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought additional hurdles as she transitioned to online learning while back home in Vanua Levu. Tragically, her family’s home was lost in a fire during this period, which significantly impacted her focus on schooling. During this difficult time, she found comfort and support from her cousin, Dr. Maria Ting, and continued to persevere through prayer and determination.
Graduation brought a wave of emotions for Monica, who felt a bittersweet sensation on the day of her celebration. Although her parents could not attend, she was grateful for the support of her siblings and friends, who played integral roles throughout her university journey.
Looking forward, Monica envisions herself working in a laboratory or classroom within the next five years. She also dreams of traveling and exploring new places around the world.
Monica’s advice to younger generations emphasizes the importance of decision-making guided by personal principles and prioritizing faith in God. Her story is not just about academic success; it’s a testament to resilience, unwavering dedication, and the power of community support.
In summary, Monica Ting exemplifies perseverance and determination, emerging as a source of inspiration for others. Her journey reminds us that despite life’s challenges, with hard work and a supportive network, dreams can be fulfilled. This positive outlook not only highlights her accomplishments but also encourages others to stay focused on their aspirations.
