Moce Secondary School showcased outstanding performance in the Fiji Secondary Schools Cricket competition held in Suva, despite facing resource challenges in their village. The team secured a victory against Cicia High School, winning by 47 runs in their opening match at Albert Park.
Moce Secondary batted first, amassing a total of 127 runs in 18.2 overs. Cicia struggled to keep up with the target, managing only 80 runs in 15.3 overs as Moce determinedly defended their score under the intense Suva heat.
Manager Teni Davui emphasized that the limited resources did not hinder the players’ motivation. “We are not that well equipped, but we managed to perform well. Back in the village, we train with plastic bats, sticks, and baseballs,” she explained. Davui noted that it was challenging for some players who were competing for the first time, but they regained their composure after a nervous start.
The team includes 14 players from 56 students enrolled at the school, spanning from Year 9 to 13, and they arrived in Suva last Thursday. “It was unbelievable for us because we had heard that we would be facing stronger teams, but we believed in God, and we succeeded in our first match against Cicia High School,” Davui added.
Looking ahead, Moce Secondary School will face the Cricket Fiji Invitational team today at 9 am at Albert Park’s pitch one. In other competition results, Ratu Finau triumphed over Ba Provincial Freebird Institute by 103 runs, CF Invitational defeated Nabua Secondary School by seven wickets, and John Wesley and Suva Grammar concluded their match in a draw with both teams scoring 115 runs.
