Moce Secondary Shines Against the Odds in Cricket Triumph

Moce Secondary School showcased remarkable resilience despite limited resources, securing a victory in the Fiji Secondary Schools Cricket competition in Suva yesterday. The team triumphed over Cicia High School by 47 runs in their first match at Albert Park.

Batting first, Moce Secondary amassed a total of 127 runs in 18.2 overs. In response, Cicia High School struggled, finishing with 80 runs in 15.3 overs. Moce maintained their composure in the sweltering Suva heat, achieving an impressive win.

Team manager Teni Davui highlighted that the school’s lack of resources did not dampen the players’ enthusiasm during their preparations. “We are not that well-equipped, but we managed to perform well this afternoon. Back in the village, we train with plastic bats, sticks, and baseballs,” she explained.

Davui noted that some players were competing at this level for the first time, which initially affected their performance. However, they eventually found their footing. The team consists of 14 players from a total of 56 students enrolled at the school, spanning Years 9 to 13. They arrived in Suva last Thursday.

“It was incredible for us because we heard we would be up against teams more experienced in cricket, but we had faith in God, and that belief helped us succeed in our opening match against Cicia High School,” Davui added.

Moce Secondary is set to face the Cricket Fiji Invitational team today at 9 am on pitch one at Albert Park. In other match results, Ratu Finau outplayed Ba Provincial Freebird Institute by 103 runs, while the CF Invitational team defeated Nabua Secondary School by seven wickets. Additionally, John Wesley and Suva Grammar ended their match in a draw, each scoring 115 runs.
