Moce Secondary School showcased remarkable performance despite limited resources, securing a victory in the Fiji Secondary Schools Cricket competition held in Suva yesterday. In their opening match at Albert Park, Moce Secondary triumphed over Cicia High School by 47 runs.
Moce batted first, accumulating a total of 127 runs in 18.2 overs. Cicia attempted to chase the target but could only manage to score 80 runs in 15.3 overs, as Moce maintained their composure under the intense Suva sun for an impressive win.
Team manager Teni Davui noted that the school’s lack of resources did not hinder the players’ enthusiasm during their training. “We are not that well equipped, but we managed to excel this afternoon (yesterday). Back in the village, we use plastic bats, some use sticks, and we practice with a baseball.” She commented on the team’s initial nerves when batting, but expressed satisfaction with their improvement as the game progressed.
Out of the 56 students enrolled at Moce Secondary, 14 are part of the cricket team, which includes players from Year 9 to 13. The team arrived in Suva last Thursday.
“For us, it was unbelievable because we had heard that we would be facing schools that are stronger than us in cricket, but we believed in God, and it led to our success in round one against Cicia High School,” added Davui.
The team is set to compete against the Cricket Fiji Invitational team today at 9 a.m. at pitch one in Albert Park. In other match results, Ratu Finau defeated Ba Provincial Freebird Institute by 103 runs, CF Invitational triumphed over Nabua Secondary School by seven wickets, while John Wesley and Suva Grammar ended their match in a draw with 115 runs each.
