Moana Pasifika Welcomes New Talent in Heritage Jersey Debut

Dynamic Moana Pasifika players Patrick Pellegrini and Tevita Ofa are set to make their debuts from the bench in the team’s home game against the Highlanders at North Harbour Stadium on Friday. Pellegrini, a talented number 10 from Sydney, brings a mix of Tongan heritage through his mother and Italian roots from his father’s family in Brescia. The opportunity to play in Super Rugby has been a lifelong dream for Pellegrini, and he expressed his excitement during Monday’s team meeting.

“Being chosen for my first cap is unbelievable. It’s a dream come true to represent a team like Moana, which is close to my family and roots,” Pellegrini commented, noting that his parents live in Sydney but that he has extended family in Auckland who will attend the game.

Pellegrini credits his development to Jackson Garden-Bachop, highlighting how the experienced player has guided him through this pivotal moment. Alongside him, Tevita Ofa, the 2024 Counties Manukau Steelers MVP, will join the lineup after stepping in as an injury replacement.

The Moana Pasifika squad sees several changes for the Cultural Round, welcoming powerful prop Sione Mafile’o, experienced lock Tom Savage, and dynamic midfielder Danny Toala into starting positions. Semisi Tupou Ta’eiloa will take to the field for his second start and is currently leading the competition in carries.

In a significant tribute, this match will mark the first time Moana Pasifika wears their heritage jersey, celebrating the legacy of the iconic Pacific Islanders team that faced the All Blacks in 2004.

Injuries have sidelined several players, including Alamanda Motuga, Fine Inisi, and Julian Savea, highlighting the physical demands of the game but also the importance of depth and team spirit as they navigate through the season.

This home game not only serves as a milestone for the debuting players but also strengthens the community ties that Moana Pasifika embodies, providing a hopeful and positive outlook as they represent their heritage on the field.
