MOANA Pasifika’s CEO, Debbie Sorensen, has announced that the much-anticipated game in Tonga has been canceled due to insufficient funding and sponsorship. Despite the franchise’s dedicated efforts to secure the necessary financial backing, the decision was ultimately made as they could not overcome the financial hurdles.
Sorensen expressed her disappointment, stating, “We have explored every avenue possible to try and make it work, but unfortunately, we were unable to secure the necessary sponsorship to bring this game to Tonga.” She highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by the team, noting that they lack the funding to host games in the Pacific region, a situation they believe needs addressing.
Although the news is disheartening for fans and families in Tonga, Sorensen remains hopeful and committed to promoting rugby in the region. “We look forward to opportunities to bring world-class rugby to Tonga and other Pacific countries as soon as possible,” she emphasized.
In the meantime, Moana Pasifika is actively collaborating with Super Rugby Pacific, New Zealand Rugby, and the Chiefs to identify an alternative venue for the Round Nine fixture, demonstrating their determination to keep the spirit of rugby alive in the Pacific.
