Moala, Lau get a healthcare boost after years of advocacy

Health services in Moala, Lau, have seen a significant enhancement following the arrival of new medical supplies, a development resulting from years of advocacy by the district’s Council of Social Services. According to Vani Catanasiga, Executive Director of the Fiji Council of Social Services, the push for improved healthcare in Moala has proven effective due to strong local leadership and community involvement.

Catanasiga pointed out that the allocation of medical services in the district’s 2024–2025 budget proposal is a testament to the power of community advocacy and collective voice. She emphasized, “These are only boxes that we are using for displays, there are many other supplies, including beds, that will help improve medical services in Moala.” This handover, facilitated by the Fiji Fale, part of the disaster risk reduction mechanism fostering local engagement, further underlines the importance of collaboration among community members and regional partners.

Usaia Moli, a representative from the Moala DCOSS, stated that the delivery included around 30 boxes of equipment, such as 10 defibrillators, first aid kits, and mini surgical tools, which are especially vital as the community approaches the festive season—a time when increased medical assistance is necessary. “The new defibrillators will be crucial in responding to cardiac emergencies, especially after last year’s incidents,” Moli noted. In addition, first aid kits will be distributed to all seven primary schools and one secondary school in Moala, benefiting the education sector significantly.

Moli expressed gratitude towards organizations like Save Our Supplies Australia, the Diversity Network of Australia, PIANGO, FCOSS, and the Ministry of Health for their collaborative efforts in making this initiative successful. He conveyed hope that such partnerships would pave the way for a fresh approach to support remote island communities, emphasizing the collective power of teamwork.

This initiative aligns with recent outreach efforts carried out by the Health and Medical Services Ministry in Moala, which aimed to bridge healthcare gaps in remote areas. In previous programs, healthcare teams provided essential services including medical consultations, dental care, and education on HIV/AIDS awareness, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility for Fijians, particularly in maritime islands.

With ongoing efforts and new supplies now in place, there is a sense of optimism about the future of healthcare in Moala and surrounding areas. The proactive measures taken reflect a collaborative spirit committed to nurturing healthier communities and improving overall health outcomes for the residents.
