Authorities have begun investigating a sexual harassment complaint made by a Miss Hibiscus contestant. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that a report was filed at the Totogo Police Station on Friday, and an investigation is currently in progress.
Allegations of inappropriate behavior, including claims of ‘groping,’ emerged last week when a contestant described being ‘jabbed on the back’ by a guest during the crowning event on September 7. The matter was brought to the attention of the Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, who has initiated an internal inquiry into the situation.
Minister Nalumisa stated that a team has been assigned to investigate the incident thoroughly to understand what transpired that evening. He emphasized the importance of maintaining professionalism to protect the interests of all queen contestants and expressed his commitment to uncovering the truth behind the allegations. He anticipates that the investigation will conclude within the week.
Additionally, Mr. Nalumisa mentioned that he had contacted Tevita Boseiwaqa, the chairperson of the Suva City Council’s special administration, to inform him that he is also part of the investigative team. The contestant has officially registered her complaint at the Totogo Police Station, initially waiting for a witness returning from abroad before proceeding. However, after further deliberation with her family, she decided to report the incident promptly.
The contestant alleges that a man, who appeared to be intoxicated, jabbed her in the back, prompting her to immediately report the incident to event officials. Minister Nalumisa remarked that alcohol consumption should never be used as an excuse for such misconduct.
