Authorities are investigating a sexual harassment complaint made by a contestant from the Miss Hibiscus pageant. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that a report was filed on Friday at the Totogo Police Station, and an investigation is currently in progress.
Allegations of inappropriate behavior emerged last week when a contestant claimed she was groped during the crowning night event on September 7. She described being jabbed on the back by a male attendee, reportedly under the influence of alcohol.
The accusations prompted Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, to initiate an internal investigation. Mr. Nalumisa stated that a team has been assigned to uncover the details of the incident.
“Professionalism must be upheld to protect the interests of all queen contestants,” he remarked. He expressed his expectation that the investigation would be completed within the week.
In addition, Mr. Nalumisa mentioned that he had contacted Tevita Boseiwaqa, the chairperson of the Suva City Council’s special administration, who is also part of the investigative team.
The contestant had initially planned to wait for a witness returning from abroad before filing her complaint. However, after consulting with her family, she decided to proceed without further delay.
She reported the incident to event officials at the time it occurred. Mr. Nalumisa emphasized that consuming alcohol should not be used as a justification for such unacceptable behavior.
