Newly crowned Miss Fiji, Dr. Peggy Ravusiro, has taken a stand on the increasing hostility in online public discourse in Fiji, urging people to engage in conversations with more kindness and empathy. In a recent interview, Dr. Ravusiro emphasized the necessity for Fijians to enhance their communication skills, suggesting that many struggle to express simple sentiments such as “How are you?” or “How are you feeling?”

According to Dr. Ravusiro, the lack of compassionate dialogue hampers the nation’s progress. She passionately advocates for fostering environments of compassion and respect, highlighting the importance of responding to negativity with kindness. “Be kind and caring even to people who may persecute you, because if you reciprocate the same energy, you’re no different from them,” she stated, suggesting that empathy could pave the way for a more harmonious society.

Drawing from her background in psychiatry, Dr. Ravusiro pointed out the critical role childhood development plays in forming an individual’s personality and resilience. She explained that shortcomings in early emotional support can lead to significant problems later in life, including issues in personality and worldview. “Everything starts during childhood – that’s when we’re most impressionable,” she added.

Additionally, Dr. Ravusiro expressed concern over the inadequate emotional support available for Fiji’s youth, linking societal issues like drug use and homelessness to deficiencies in nurturing during childhood. She highlighted the importance of hearing affirmations and having the freedom to express one’s talents as vital elements for healthy emotional development.

As for her own plans moving forward, Dr. Ravusiro remains open to spontaneity and divine guidance, preferring to let her journey unfold without fixed strategies. “I leave it up to the Lord. Wherever He wants me to serve, I will serve,” she said, reflecting her desire for a life led by purpose rather than rigid expectations.

Dr. Ravusiro’s words resonate with the need for societal change through effective communication and emotional support, offering a hopeful vision for the future of Fiji. Her call to action for empathy and proactive engagement emphasizes the fundamental role of kindness in overcoming the challenges faced by the community today.
