Miss Fiji Peggy Ravusiro has clarified her decision to step aside from her role as Fiji’s representative in the upcoming Miss Pacific Islands Pageant 2026, emphasizing that it was not a refusal to serve but rather a response to concerns over the contract terms proposed by the pageant organizers. Dr. Ravusiro pointed out that while the official explanation indicated she did not sign the contract within the required timeframe, that was only a part of the story.
In her statement, Dr. Ravusiro, who is also a medical doctor and the reigning Miss Labasa, expressed that she had requested certain clarifications and amendments to the contract. These included protections against potential legal and financial liabilities in case of misconduct or damage to her reputation. She felt it was essential to safeguard her rights and wellbeing, stating, “I did not sign the contract as presented because I sought clarification and amendments to the contract in order to protect my legal rights, my wellbeing, and my reputation as a contestant and public figure.”
The concerns she raised included a clause that would require her to indemnify the Miss Fiji Pageant and its representatives against any losses, and a termination provision to allow her to exit the agreement if there were issues of misconduct. Additionally, she found the confidentiality requirements concerning, as they hindered her ability to seek independent legal advice.
Despite her attempts to engage with the organizers in good faith, Dr. Ravusiro reported feeling disrespected, stating that her inquiries were often met with negativity. She described the experience as distressing, claiming that inappropriate remarks about her body and character were made during discussions that were meant to empower women.
The director of the Miss Fiji Pageant, Ana Tuiketei-Bolabiu, confirmed that Ailava Samuels, the first runner-up, will now represent Fiji at the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant 2026. She noted that registrations were already closed, and after discussions, Dr. Ravusiro was unable to assume the role due to her decision not to enter into a contractual agreement with the Miss Fiji Secretariat.
Dr. Ravusiro concluded by expressing her gratitude to her supporters, including Team Labasa and fellow queens, while wishing her runner-up success in her new role. This situation highlights the importance of transparency and fair treatment in beauty pageants and encourages future participants to advocate for their rights.
