Concerns are rising regarding the number of complaints lodged by employers about overseas workers whose qualifications do not align with their actual skills. Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Agni Deo Singh, has highlighted that many disputes surface when workers enter Fiji holding certificates that fail to reflect their real experience or expertise.
Singh explained that this mismatch not only hampers productivity but also increases pressure on the employment system. He provided an example of the issue: when a senior tyre layer is hired under the premise of possessing high-level skills and is compensated accordingly, yet the worker arrives lacking the required qualifications, conflict becomes inevitable.
The Minister attributed many of these discrepancies to dishonest recruitment agents operating within source countries. He urged employers to conduct thorough due diligence before finalizing recruitment to mitigate potential losses associated with such mismatches. Should disputes arise, employers often find themselves faced with the costly decision to repatriate workers, leading to financial setbacks.
To address this growing concern, Singh is advocating for enhanced background checks and verification processes, encouraging employers and recruitment agents to ensure that overseas candidates are adequately vetted prior to contract agreements. This proactive approach aims to create a more efficient and reliable recruitment process, ultimately benefiting both employers and employees within the industry.
