Miriama Taletawa earned a silver medal in the junior category of the women’s 76kg event at the 2024 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, which took place at the Vodafone Arena in Suva on Thursday. Taletawa successfully lifted 90kg in the snatch and 112kg in the clean and jerk, achieving a total of 202kg.
Reflecting on her achievement, Taletawa expressed her happiness and excitement upon receiving the silver medal. She described the nerves she felt during her first lift, admitting to being scared but managed to perform well despite her worries. “I was shocked to see my result afterwards in the snatch category,” she said, emphasizing her surprise at exceeding her expectations.
Her preparation with the Fiji team prior to the tournament was positive, with Taletawa noting that training sessions produced varying outcomes. She appreciated the supportive atmosphere and the teamwork, acknowledging that while some training days had great lifts, others did not meet expectations.
Looking to the future, Taletawa plans to continue preparing for upcoming competitions, focusing on enhancing her skills and becoming an even stronger lifter. She expressed her gratitude to her family and team officials for their unwavering support throughout her weightlifting journey. “Thank you very much for the support and for always being there for me in the good times and bad,” she stated.
In addition to her recent success, Taletawa is also recognized as the current holder of the Fiji Sportswoman of the Year Award. The championship will conclude today with the final events taking place in the capital.
