Pacific Specialists Healthcare has marked a significant achievement with the inspiring story of Carol Wallen, an 80-year-old woman from Melbourne, Australia. Carol arrived in Fiji in mid-December 2023 to celebrate her milestone birthday with her son, Darren. However, during their stay at the Sheraton Fiji Resort on Denarau Island, she encountered severe health complications that necessitated her transfer from a local clinic to Nadi Hospital.

As Carol’s condition worsened, Darren researched alternative medical facilities and opted to transfer her to Pacific Specialists Healthcare (PSH) in Nadi. It was here that Carol experienced a cardiopulmonary arrest, during which her heart stopped for nearly ten minutes, prompting the medical team to provide critical multi-organ support.

Thanks to the rapid response and expertise of the hospital staff, particularly Dr. Ratu Vereniki Raiwalui, Carol was successfully resuscitated and began to improve significantly. She expressed deep gratitude towards the medical team for their exceptional care, highlighting that her recovery was nothing short of miraculous. “The staff have been really marvelous, and I am much better today because of that,” Carol stated. She even expressed a desire to return for another holiday once fully recovered.

PSH managing director Parvish Kumar emphasized the importance of partnerships between hotels and medical facilities to ensure that guests receive timely treatment when unwell. Darren echoed this sentiment, stating he would recommend PSH to his friends and family, noting that the care his mother received was on par with, if not better than, that found in Australian hospitals.

Dr. Raiwalui shared insights into the medical process, noting that Carol was closely monitored and given the necessary intensive care, which ultimately led to her recovery. Just days after overcoming extensive health challenges, she was taken off life support and displayed her newfound strength by being wheeled outside the hospital with a big smile.

Following her recovery, Carol and Darren were repatriated to Australia on a Medivac flight, complete with an intensive care team from Rescue Services out of Brisbane. Kumar remarked on the strategic role of PSH in providing not only care for locals but also essential support for the tourism sector.

This story serves as a testament to the dedication and expertise of the PSH medical team, showcasing the vital role healthcare facilities play in ensuring the safety and well-being of tourists in Fiji. It highlights the importance of accessibility to quality medical care, reassuring travelers that help is available when they need it most.

The focus on partnerships between tourism and healthcare is hopeful for both industries, fostering an environment where visitors can enjoy their vacations with peace of mind, knowing that exceptional medical care is within reach if necessary.
