Carol Wallen, an 80-year-old resident of Melbourne, Australia, recently experienced a remarkable medical turnaround while vacationing in Fiji. Initially arriving in mid-December 2023 for a birthday celebration with her son Darren, Carol’s trip took a concerning turn when she developed health complications and had to be admitted to a local clinic before transferring to Nadi Hospital.

As her condition worsened, Darren sought a better facility and found Pacific Specialists Healthcare (PSH) in Nadi. Carol was swiftly transferred there, where she faced a daunting challenge: she suffered a cardiopulmonary arrest after her heart stopped beating for approximately ten minutes. Fortunately, thanks to the rapid response of the specialists and Intensive Care Unit staff at PSH, including Consultant Anaesthesia and Intensivist Dr. Ratu Vereniki Raiwalui, she was successfully resuscitated.

Reflecting on her recovery, Carol expressed her gratitude for the “marvelous” care she received at PSH, stating, “I am much better today because of that,” and adding that she plans to return for another holiday once fully recovered.

Darren also praised the hospital’s services, noting the care she received was comparable to that of an Australian hospital. “To see her recovery so quickly is a testament to the medical team here,” he remarked. Dr. Raiwalui confirmed that Carol’s swift improvement was due to the high level of intensive care and organ support provided during her treatment. Just days after being taken off life support, Carol was able to sit in a wheelchair and smile as she was taken outside the hospital.

In the wake of this incredible turnaround, Mr. Parvish Kumar, managing director of PSH, highlighted the importance of partnerships between hotels and medical facilities to ensure proper care for tourists who fall ill. This affiliation not only aims to streamline medical treatment for visitors but also positions PSH as a vital resource for both local residents and the tourism sector.

In summary, Carol Wallen’s experience showcases the exceptional quality of care available at PSH and emphasizes the importance of having access to reliable medical services while traveling. This story is a powerful reminder of resilience and the potential for recovery, offering hope to those in similar situations.

By fostering connections between healthcare providers and the tourism industry, there is a promising outlook for enhanced health and safety for travelers in the future.
