Joylyn John feels that her sister’s morning prayer played a crucial role in protecting her family during the recent earthquake that hit Port Vila. Currently attending a week-long training session at the Foundation for Rural Integrated Enterprises and Development (FRIEND) in Lautoka, Ms. John shared that her family experienced significant distress as they attempted to stay connected during the natural disaster.

After the earthquake struck on Tuesday, Ms. John struggled to reach her family due to network disruptions. She described a worrying wait until the evening before receiving any news. Fortunately, when communication resumed, she learned that her family was unharmed and had moved to higher ground as a precaution due to a subsequent tsunami warning.

One of her sisters recounted the terrifying experience, attributing their safety to her morning prayers, expressing astonishment at their survival. After the tsunami warning was lifted, the family returned home, but they continue to face challenges, as electricity and water supplies remain interrupted due to significant damage to infrastructure in Port Vila.

Following the earthquake, rescue teams have been diligently working to assist those injured or trapped under debris. Ms. John’s colleague, Marie Dick, who lives in nearby Emua Village, echoed similar relief upon receiving messages from her husband confirming their family’s safety.

Marie also mentioned that the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) is currently limiting flight operations to medical emergencies only, which adds to the challenges faced by those affected.

In light of this event, the resilience and strength displayed by families like Joylyn’s during such trying times serve as a reminder of the power of community and faith. As rescue efforts continue, it is hoped that recovery will progress swiftly, bringing security and normalcy back to the lives impacted by the earthquake.
