An aircraft incident involving a GA-8 Airvan, designated DQ-VAN, took place at Yasawa Aerodrome on the morning of December 21, 2024. The flight departed from Nadi Airport at 9:49 AM, but upon landing at Yasawa Aerodrome, the aircraft overran the runway and came to a halt just beyond the runway limits.

Thankfully, the aircraft incurred damage primarily to its nose wheel and propeller, but there were no injuries reported among the pilot and the six passengers onboard, marking a fortunate outcome in an otherwise concerning situation. The Yasawa Aerodrome remains open for aviation activities, ensuring that operations can continue without interruption.

In response to the accident, Hon. Viliame Gavoka, the Minister responsible for Tourism and Civil Aviation, will appoint an investigator to conduct a comprehensive examination of the incident. This investigation will adhere to established protocols and international standards, and its outcomes are expected to inform future safety measures within the sector.

The Ministry remains committed to prioritizing the safety and well-being of all involved in Fiji’s aviation services. Appreciation is also extended to the authorities and personnel who provided prompt assistance during this incident.

This incident reminds us of the resilience and responsiveness of aviation safety protocols. As investigations proceed, there is hope that findings will lead to stronger safety practices, ensuring continued safe travel for all passengers in Fiji’s air transportation system.
