Pacific Specialists Healthcare has recently celebrated a remarkable success story that highlights the effectiveness of its medical team. Carol Wallen, an 80-year-old from Melbourne, Australia, traveled to Fiji with her son Darren in December 2023 to mark her milestone birthday. Unfortunately, while residing at the Sheraton Fiji Resort on Denarau Island, she faced serious health issues that necessitated urgent medical attention.
After being admitted to a clinic and subsequently transferred to Nadi Hospital due to her declining health, Darren sought out alternatives and discovered PSH in Nadi, where they moved her for more specialized care. At PSH, Mrs. Wallen experienced a life-threatening cardiopulmonary arrest, during which her heart stopped for about ten minutes. Thanks to the swift actions of the hospital’s specialists, particularly Dr. Ratu Vereniki Raiwalui and the Intensive Care Unit team, she was successfully resuscitated and received essential multi-organ support.
Mrs. Wallen praised the remarkable care she received, stating that the staff’s efforts significantly improved her condition. She expressed her eagerness to return to Fiji once she is fully recovered, grateful for the support that facilitated her recovery.
PSH’s managing director, Parvish Kumar, emphasized the importance of partnerships between hospitals and hotels to ensure immediate access to medical services for visitors who may fall ill. Darren Wallen echoed this sentiment, noting that the treatment and care his mother received at PSH were on par with, if not superior to, that available in Australia. He plans to recommend the hospital to friends and family traveling to Fiji.
Dr. Raiwalui detailed Mrs. Wallen’s journey, praising the intensive care provided that resulted in a significant recovery. Just days after being weaned off life support, she was able to sit in a wheelchair and enjoy the sunshine outside the hospital, an inspiring sight that underscores the hospital’s commitment to patient care. Following her recovery, Mrs. Wallen and Darren were repatriated to Australia via a special Medivac flight with a specialized Intensive Care team.
Kumar reiterated that having PSH positioned to support not just local health needs but also the tourism industry is crucial. This collaboration is expected to streamline medical assistance for tourists, enhancing their overall experience while visiting Fiji.
This story serves as a testament to the critical role medical facilities play in ensuring the health and well-being of travelers, showcasing the importance of responsive healthcare systems in tourist destinations. The positive outcome of Mrs. Wallen’s situation reflects the dedication and expertise of the medical community at PSH, providing hope and reassurance to both local residents and visitors alike.
In summary, Mrs. Wallen’s ordeal and recovery journey highlight the potential for lifesaving medical care in remote locations, illustrating the need for strong healthcare partnerships to support tourism safely.
