Joylyn John attributes her family’s safety during the recent earthquake in Port Vila to a simple morning prayer. While attending a weeklong training session with her colleague Marie Dick at the FRIEND headquarters in Lautoka, Ms. John faced a harrowing wait to learn about her family’s well-being after the earthquake struck.
She described the experience as traumatic, especially when she struggled to contact her family due to network disruptions. Fortunately, she eventually learned that her family was unharmed, although they evacuated to higher ground due to a tsunami warning. Her sister recounted the fear they experienced, but attributed their survival to the protective power of prayer.
Once the tsunami warning was lifted, her family returned home, but they are still facing challenges due to disrupted electricity and water services caused by damaged infrastructure in Port Vila. With three storage tanks and numerous electrical posts affected, the utility provider UNELCO is currently working to restore services.
Marie Dick, who lives in Emua Village just north of Port Vila, shared her own anxious experience during the quake. She received a text from her husband informing her of the situation and was unable to sleep until she confirmed their safety.
The National Disaster Management Office has since communicated that only medical flights would be operating, signaling ongoing concern for public safety despite the immediate danger having passed.
This incident serves as a reminder of the strength found in community and spiritual beliefs during times of crisis. The resilience of the residents, coupled with the tireless efforts of rescue teams, showcases hope amid adversity. It emphasizes how, even in challenging situations, the power of faith and the support of loved ones can provide comfort and assurance.
