A source has indicated that a “miracle” may be needed for the multi-million-dollar hangar construction project at COMO Laucala Island to be completed within the next two months. When the hangar does open, it is expected to boost employment figures on the island. The tourism operator’s project in Nadi has experienced numerous delays and multiple “Coming Soon” announcements throughout its troubled construction history.
While the luxury lounge at Nadi International Airport has already been completed, the opening of the hangar was anticipated before the end of the year. The hangar’s completion will facilitate a smoother transition for guests traveling to and from Kokomo Private Island. COMO Laucala Island has stated that international flight arrivals will be welcomed at an information desk in the arrivals hall and then escorted directly to the new luxury lounge, which will feature refreshments, entertainment, a family playroom, and shower facilities for guests to refresh after long-haul flights. Upon departure, guests will again benefit from the lounge while waiting for their connecting flights out of Fiji.
Delays in the hangar’s opening have been attributed, in part, to the use of an incorrect concrete mix on the connecting apron, necessitating costly repair work.
In 2019, COMO Laucala Island announced a $45 million investment for the luxury lounge and hangar facility. A stop order was issued in 2022, which was lifted in 2023.
The island has been described as a high-end destination for affluent travelers, with Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica noting that the hangar’s development has faced delays due to bottlenecks in the investor space. COMO Laucala Island is a private resort in Fiji that accommodates private planes, boasting 25 villas that redefine luxury. The property also features three aircraft that have been operational for several years.
