An incident involving a GA-8 Airvan aircraft, bearing the registration DQ-VAN, took place at Yasawa Aerodrome on the morning of December 21, 2024. The aircraft took off from Nadi Airport at 9:49 AM and, upon landing at Yasawa Aerodrome, it went off the runway and came to a halt just beyond the runway strip.
Fortunately, the aircraft only suffered damage to its nose wheel and propeller, and remarkably, both the pilot and the six passengers on board emerged unscathed with no injuries reported. The Yasawa Aerodrome’s runway remains operational, and aviation activities are continuing as normal.
In response to the incident, Hon. Viliame Gavoka, the Minister responsible for Tourism and Civil Aviation, announced that an investigator would be appointed to conduct a detailed investigation, adhering to established procedures and international standards. The results of this inquiry will inform any necessary changes aimed at improving safety in the aviation sector.
The priority remains on the safety and welfare of all passengers, crew, and stakeholders within Fiji’s aviation industry. We appreciate the swift response and dedicated support from relevant authorities and personnel.
This incident, though unfortunate, highlights the robust safety measures in place that ensured no injuries occurred. It also opens an avenue for improving safety standards and ensuring that such incidents are minimized in the future, reassuring travelers of the continued commitment to aviation safety in Fiji.
