Minnesota United FC has officially signed veteran defender Julian Gressel, a move announced on Tuesday. The 31-year-old German international was released by Inter Miami CF prior to joining Minnesota and has signed a contract that runs through 2026, with an option for an additional year.

Khaled El-Ahmad, Minnesota’s chief soccer officer, expressed excitement about the addition, stating, “Julian brings an impressive depth of MLS experience and championship pedigree to Minnesota. He is a proven winner and competitor and our hope is that he will contribute those qualities to our team and continue to push our club forward throughout the rest of this season and beyond.”

Throughout his career, Gressel has accumulated 26 goals and 13 assists across 245 MLS matches, having played for various teams including Atlanta United, D.C. United, the Vancouver Whitecaps, the Columbus Crew, and most recently Inter Miami. Gressel was awarded MLS Rookie of the Year in 2017 and boasts an impressive tally of seven championships, including two MLS Cups and the Supporters’ Shield.

Last season with Miami, Gressel played alongside superstar Lionel Messi, contributing to the team’s success with 12 assists and one goal in 32 matches. However, he has yet to make an appearance in the current season under new coach Javier Mascherano.

Gressel’s experience and distinguished background in the league may be pivotal for Minnesota United as they aim for greater achievements in the forthcoming matches.

This transfer illustrates Minnesota’s commitment to strengthening their squad and enhancing their competitiveness in the league. As Gressel joins the fold, fans can anticipate an exciting new chapter for both the player and the club.
