The Ministry of Climate Change has made significant strides in enhancing access to climate finance for various stakeholders, including communities, government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the private sector. This update was articulated during an interview with Dr. Sivendra Michael, the Permanent Secretary for Climate Change.

Reflecting on the ministry’s activities over the past year, Dr. Michael announced that USD $142.7 million had been mobilized through collaborative efforts with multiple sector ministries. This funding supports a wide array of climate adaptation and resilience projects across the nation. According to Dr. Michael, this initiative is not solely managed by the Ministry of Climate Change but involves a collective effort from other ministries, such as Public Works, Energy and Transport, and Agriculture, among others.

To streamline the financing process, the ministry has introduced various funding mechanisms designed to be more accessible, significantly reducing application timelines. Dr. Michael indicated that quick grants can now be prepared and submitted within a few weeks, with funding amounts ranging from USD 5,000 to USD 25,000. Furthermore, the Communities Climate Adaptation Fund offers grants of up to USD 100,000, with several communities, including Macuata-i-wai, Narata, and Vuniniudrovu, already in the implementation phase of their projects.

The Climate Finance Team and the Project Development Unit are actively collaborating to identify appropriate funding sources and provide guidance for applicants. This support extends to government channels, direct community access, NGOs, and the private sector. By broadening the call for climate funding applications from the private sector and NGOs, the ministry aims to enhance participation and adaptability among all stakeholders.

Dr. Michael emphasized the Ministry’s dedication to equipping communities with the knowledge, tools, and assistance necessary to craft strong and eligible project proposals. This effort ensures that no community is overlooked due to previous limitations in capabilities, marking a hopeful path forward in the fight against climate change. The commitment to facilitating easier access to funding not only empowers communities but also fosters resilience in the face of climate challenges.
