The Ministry of Youth is urgently seeking additional shelters to accommodate street dwellers and rehabilitated youths. Minister Jese Saukuru has highlighted the pressing need for more facilities, stating they are running out of options to house those in need. He expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Social Protection for permitting the use of the former Old People’s Home in Lautoka as a temporary solution, and ongoing negotiations aim to secure this site as a permanent rehabilitation center.

Mr. Saukuru mentioned that potential land for new shelters has been identified in Nadroga, but complications regarding land ownership persist. He emphasized the importance of collaborating with stakeholders to create lasting solutions for these vulnerable individuals. “We need to help the less fortunate with the resources available to us,” he said, noting the ministry’s commitment to rehabilitating youths and offering them a second chance at life.

In light of increasing concerns over street violence, following a recent stabbing incident in Lautoka involving an alleged street dweller, the Ministry is working closely with local authorities, including the police, to enhance safety and prevent further occurrences.

The number of street dwellers in Lautoka continues to rise, with some individuals reportedly migrating from Suva. Despite the ministry’s efforts to rehabilitate and reintegrate individuals into families or shelters, the actual number of street dwellers hasn’t decreased, and in some cases, has increased. “The home is where we need to start,” Mr. Saukuru stated, highlighting the necessity of strengthening family units to keep children off the streets.

The ministry is planning to intensify its initiatives in the upcoming year, focusing on addressing the root causes that drive youths to homelessness. There is a hopeful sentiment that with concerted efforts and community support, the cycle of youth homelessness can be broken.
