Delays in providing legal instructions from various ministries are resulting in significant costs for the State due to court penalties and are undermining its credibility in the judicial system. Solicitor-General Ropate Green has brought attention to the challenge faced by his office, which often struggles to meet the strict deadlines imposed by the court.

Green noted that the court operates on rigid timelines, some as short as seven days, and when these deadlines are not met, the State is held liable for costs. The situation has led to frustration among judges, particularly when the State fails to respond promptly, as it is expected to uphold the highest legal standards.

When lacking necessary instructions from client ministries, Green emphasized that his office cannot adequately represent the State in court. He highlighted that the need for improved communication and coordination between ministries and his office is essential for addressing these issues.

By enhancing collaboration, the State can protect public funds, ensure compliance with court processes, and restore public confidence in the justice system. This proactive approach would not only alleviate the current pressures but also foster a more efficient legal process that benefits all parties involved.
