Ministers Urge Former Miners to Invest Wisely in $10K Payouts

The Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Agni Deo Singh, has called on former Vatukoula Gold miners to use the $10,000 payments wisely. Out of 368 miners who participated in a strike 33 years ago, 153 have been approved for payment, while the Ministry is in the process of verifying the next-of-kin for the remaining individuals.

Singh stated that a total of $25,000 will be distributed among 368 families. Currently, $10,000 is included in this year’s budget, with an additional $15,000 expected to be disbursed from next year’s budget.

“I understand you deserve more than this, given the hardships you have faced. However, this is the best support we can provide right now, and I hope it assists you in starting anew,” he remarked.

He urged the recipients to be responsible with the funds, emphasizing that the money should not be squandered. The Minister also confirmed that the Ministry of Finance plans to transfer the $10,000 into the bank accounts of the 153 approved recipients by Friday.
