A select group of Ministers convened yesterday to devise immediate strategies to address the rising issue of street dwellers. Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, announced that various referral pathways are being established to assist different demographics, including beggars, the elderly, and youth.

A significant conclusion from the meeting was the agreement among ministers to enhance the enforcement of existing laws aimed at discouraging individuals from residing on the streets of major towns and cities. Ms. Kiran highlighted ongoing discussions about initiatives to set up rehabilitation centers designed to aid young street dwellers dealing with drug addiction.

The meeting also included participation from Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalusima, Minister for Rural and Maritime Development Sakiasi Ditoka, Minister for Policing Iowane Naivalurua, Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga, and Minister for I-Taukei Affairs Ifireimi Vasu.

In line with these efforts, similar initiatives have emerged in the community. For instance, Minister Nalusima recently addressed eight individuals found living in Sukuna Park, expressing a commitment to ensuring their basic needs are met, such as housing and employment opportunities. This demonstrates a proactive approach to humanizing the struggle faced by street dwellers, by acknowledging their stories and aspirations.

Moreover, the Ministry is pursuing the establishment of a halfway house in Nadi to assist individuals confronting substance abuse and support their reintegration into society. This initiative mirrors similar efforts already being executed successfully in Suva and reflects a growing recognition of the complexities surrounding homelessness, which often intertwine with drug addiction and mental health issues.

The collaboration of various government ministries and local organizations in addressing these issues signals a positive step forward. Continued dialogue among the Ministers and community stakeholders may pave the way for sustainable solutions that not only alleviate the conditions of vulnerable populations but also promote a community environment where everyone can thrive. The hope is that through collective efforts, effective programs will emerge to support those in need while ensuring a safe and harmonious community for all.
