Fiji’s Sugar Minister, Charan Jeath Singh, has issued a strong warning to sugarcane farmers regarding their commitments to farming, stating, “If you do not have any interest in the sugarcane farm, get out of the land!” This message was conveyed during a meeting in Lautoka and follows an incident in Seaqaqa where four farmers falsely claimed that landowners were denying them access to land for cultivation.

Minister Singh emphasized the critical need for honesty within the industry, particularly concerning financial responsibilities. These farmers, who have reportedly not repaid loans from the Sugarcane Growers Fund for five to six years, were found to be misleading about their circumstances. Singh made it clear that those unwilling to engage sincerely with the farming process should make way for others who are ready to actively contribute.

This warning takes place at a challenging moment for Fiji’s sugar industry, which has seen production figures drop drastically, with average yields falling from 100 tons per hectare to approximately 47 tons. The decline can be attributed to various factors, including inadequate support from the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) and ineffective land management practices. Singh’s recent calls for improved accountability among both farmers and FSC personnel highlight the pressing need for reform in the sector.

By encouraging farmers to focus their efforts and be truthful about their situations, Singh is laying the groundwork for potential revitalization within the sugarcane industry. The hope is that with stronger commitment and transparent practices, the sector can recover and emerge stronger in the future.

In summary, while the challenges facing Fiji’s sugar industry are significant, Minister Singh’s emphasis on integrity and commitment among farmers presents an opportunity for renewal and growth in this vital agricultural sector.
