Fisheries and Forests Minister Alitia Bainivalu has recently explored two promising aquaculture pond locations in Kadavu, namely Tabuya and Solovola villages within the Nabukelevu District. Her visit, which is part of a broader initiative to enhance aquaculture in the region, also included a tour of a seaweed farm at Cevai, owned by local entrepreneur Maika Vunituraga.
Bainivalu’s tour began last week with a meeting involving government officials at the Vunisea Government Station. The itinerary culminated yesterday with a visit to the Kavala Fisheries Station, strengthening connections between local operators and government support mechanisms.
This focus on aquaculture indicates a proactive approach towards sustainable fishing practices, and it could lead to increased economic opportunities for local communities. By developing aquaculture, the government aims to boost food security and reduce overfishing in natural waters, paving the way for a more sustainable future in fisheries.
Encouraging local involvement and investment in aquaculture can inspire hope for long-term environmental and economic benefits in the region.
