Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs Pio Tikoduadua has expressed a desire to resolve ongoing issues in the Police portfolio as he awaits the completion of investigations regarding his involvement in the improper issuance of passports to children of foreign nationals linked to the Grace Road human rights allegations. In light of these developments, he has stepped aside from his responsibilities related to Immigration and the Police, with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka temporarily overseeing these areas.

During this transitional period, Mr. Tikoduadua, who played a vital role in the Fiji Police Force reset initiative, voiced hopes for a prompt appointment of a new Commissioner of Police. He noted the urgency for action, despite no longer holding the Ministerial position, emphasizing the necessity of progress within the force.

He highlighted recent advancements in the collaboration between Fiji and Australia, noting the renewal of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as an important step forward. This partnership extends beyond the Pacific policing initiative into more substantial bilateral engagement.

Mr. Tikoduadua pointed out that a consultant will serve as a mentor for the new Commissioner, and additional support personnel from Australia and New Zealand are ready to join efforts aimed at elevating operational standards within the Fiji Police Force. He mentioned that this endeavor began with the “Restore Blue” initiative, which aims to implement effective policing strategies with the assistance of international partners.

While he acknowledged the ongoing investigation, Mr. Tikoduadua reaffirmed his commitment to completing the work he has started, urging cooperation from the government as they navigate the reshuffling of roles.

In summary, Minister Tikoduadua is actively awaiting the resolution of investigations while stressing the importance of stable leadership in the Fiji Police Force. His proactive approach and the strategic partnerships formed highlight the commitment to enhancing law enforcement standards in Fiji, fostering a hopeful perspective on future developments in the sector.
