Minister’s Controversial Comments Ignite Cabinet Tensions

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka avoided answering whether any disciplinary measures will be taken against the Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya, regarding her insubordination.

Ms. Tabuya recently expressed her support for reintroducing the death penalty as a means to deter drug criminals using Fiji as a transit hub for illicit substances, a topic that should have been addressed by the Cabinet first. Earlier in the week, Mr. Rabuka mentioned that the Cabinet would handle Ms. Tabuya’s actions.

Ms. Tabuya has a reputation for disregarding Cabinet protocols, which has led to calls for her dismissal from her ministerial role. In a recent interview, Mr. Rabuka stated he did not wish to make any assumptions about the situation.

“The issue concerning Lynda Tabuya has not yet been addressed,” he remarked. “I haven’t been in Fiji long enough to tackle this matter. It was meant to be discussed by the Cabinet yesterday (Tuesday).”

Mr. Rabuka emphasized that it was unfortunate Ms. Tabuya voiced her opinions publicly before the Cabinet had discussions on the matter.
