Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has officially removed Lynda Tabuya from her position as Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection due to recent concerns regarding her conduct, which did not align with the standards expected of government ministers. This dismissal comes in the wake of a private video involving Tabuya that circulated publicly.

The decision was executed under Section 92(3)(b) of the Constitution and takes effect immediately. However, it’s important to note that Tabuya will retain her position as a Member of Parliament despite her loss of ministerial duties.

In her place, Assistant Women’s Minister Sashi Kiran has been designated to take over the portfolio, pending her swearing-in by the President.

This situation highlights the importance of maintaining conduct that reflects the integrity of public offices. As the government navigates this transition, it will be crucial for newly appointed Minister Kiran to focus on the pressing needs of women and children in Fiji, ensuring that their voices continue to be heard in the national dialogue. This change also opens an opportunity for renewed leadership and fresh perspectives in addressing social protection issues.

In summary, Prime Minister Rabuka’s decisive action reflects a commitment to upholding standards in government, whilst the appointment of Sashi Kiran brings hope for a focused approach to women’s issues in the coming period.
