Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has removed Lynda Tabuya from her role as the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, citing her conduct and the need for Ministers to uphold certain standards. This decision comes in the wake of a private video of her that has circulated publicly.
The dismissal is in accordance with Section 92(3)(b) of the Constitution, and it takes immediate effect; however, Tabuya will continue to serve as a Member of Parliament. In her place, Assistant Minister Sashi Kiran has been appointed as the new Minister, pending her formal swearing-in by the President.
This situation highlights the significant responsibilities that come with public office, as well as the scrutiny that officials face regarding their behavior. It is a reminder of the importance of maintaining professional standards in leadership roles, especially in sensitive areas such as women’s and children’s welfare.
The appointment of Sashi Kiran could bring fresh perspectives to the portfolio, and her experience in assisting the Minister may ease the transition. As the government navigates these changes, it is hoped that this reshuffling will ultimately strengthen efforts to promote the welfare of women and children in the country.
