Opposition Member of Parliament Ketan Lal has voiced strong criticism regarding Justice Minister Siromi Turaga’s recent decision to place Commissioner of Corrections Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa on leave, calling it “procedurally questionable” and a misuse of ministerial power. Mr. Lal, who also serves as the Opposition’s shadow justice minister, emphasized that the role of Commissioner of Corrections is constitutionally independent and appointed by the President, hence not under the jurisdiction of a line minister regarding employment issues.

He expressed concern that this action reflects a serious misinterpretation of the limits of ministerial authority. Mr. Lal pointed out that if there were pertinent allegations involving the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS), the minister should have pursued a lawful approach through the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) instead. Furthermore, he criticized the lack of transparency regarding the allegations against Dr. Nakarawa, suggesting that such a sudden decision erodes public trust in both the government and its institutions.

This situation highlights the importance of maintaining established legal boundaries and procedures within government offices, ensuring accountability and proper oversight. The call for transparency and adherence to constitutional protocols is crucial in fostering trust in public institutions. As the government navigates these challenges, there is hope that a commitment to due process will ultimately strengthen governance and support public confidence in leadership.
