The Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, has addressed and dismissed accusations regarding his management of consultations with the Mataqali Nabukebuke related to mining endeavors by the Namosi Joint Venture (NJV). Mr. Vosarogo asserted that he has actively engaged with the landowners, countering claims of inattention.

He stated, “I have met with Mataqali Nabukebuke and from that meeting, understood the depth of their concerns.” The Minister emphasized that his goal is to balance the insights from the landowners with the imperative to develop the mineral sector, generate employment through NJV, and assess the socio-economic impacts associated with the issuance of Special Prospecting Licenses (SPL).

Mr. Vosarogo also highlighted his strategy to wait for the return of Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, the Turaga na Vunivalu na Tui Namosi, to facilitate a comprehensive discussion on the issue. “It is not that I have not met with the landowners at all. That is factually incorrect and poor reporting,” he emphasized.

He recounted his previous meetings in the Namosi Provincial Council Office, where he reviewed numerous letters of objection submitted to the Department of Mineral Resources. Additionally, he criticized LAMA chairman Sipiriano Nariva for allegedly prioritizing activist perspectives over understanding local customs, calling into question LAMA’s legitimacy.

“We are doing now what the landowners were not given under the previous government. We have given them the opportunity to sit and discuss, and we will continue to do so,” he affirmed.

In summary, Minister Vosarogo reiterated his dedication to fostering a balanced approach that respects landowners’ concerns while also promoting necessary economic development through consultations that prioritize recognition of local customs and structures.

This proactive approach can lead to positive dialogues between the government and landowners regarding the development of the mineral sector, creating pathways for mutually beneficial agreements and community engagement in decision-making.
