Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga is urging parents to ensure their children are registered at the Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) Registry before the upcoming school year. During his visit to Bua on Wednesday and Thursday, he launched BDM services at various Post Fiji Shops including those in Kubulau, Wainunu, Lekutu, and Nabouwalu.
Mr. Turaga emphasized the importance of parental responsibility in registering their children, stating, “Every child born on this earth comes from a family, a mother and a father.” He highlighted that the ministry’s recent shift toward decentralizing these services aims to simplify the registration process for families.
Officials from the ministry found that many children remain unregistered due to reasons such as oversight, lack of awareness, and some financial barriers. Mr. Turaga explained the need for comprehensive registration, as it allows the Government to accurately assess demographic data, which is essential for informed policy-making and better planning.
With the new setup bringing services closer to the people, families in Bua will no longer need to travel long distances to access BDM services, offering a more accessible solution for registration.
This initiative not only addresses the immediate needs of families but also strengthens community structures by ensuring that all children are accounted for, promoting a sense of responsibility and awareness among parents. The availability of BDM services at localized locations is a significant step towards inclusiveness and efficiency in government services.
In summary, the Minister’s call to action reinforces the idea that registering children is a fundamental duty of parenthood, ultimately supporting the community’s growth and development.
