Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, has issued a strong warning to parents regarding the illegal act of children begging on the streets of Fiji. This statement came after an investigation into the case of Mereseini Biaudamu, who was found begging in Nausori with two children under her care.

Ms. Kiran clarified that the children were not Ms. Biaudamu’s biological children, but had been entrusted to her by their mother, who claimed ignorance about their begging activities. Furthermore, it was highlighted that the parents of these children receive monthly allowances from the ministry.

The minister emphasized the serious risks involved in children begging, which can lead to exploitation, abuse, and a lack of safe environments for their development. She reiterated the legal responsibility of parents and guardians to ensure the safety and well-being of their children. Any encouragement or coercion that leads children to beg is a violation of their rights and goes against national laws designed for their protection.

In light of the approaching holiday season, Ms. Kiran urged the public to report any instances of child begging. She assured that the ministry, alongside law enforcement, is prepared to prosecute those who endanger the welfare of children.

The call to action encourages contributions from the community to foster a safer environment for families and children as they look towards a peaceful 2025. Citizens are invited to report concerns via the ministry’s child helpline at 1325.

This proactive approach highlights the government’s commitment to child welfare and the importance of community involvement in protecting vulnerable children, suggesting a hopeful trend towards reducing child exploitation in Fiji.
