The Minister for Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, has urged the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to apply common sense in law enforcement following a viral video that depicted a woman being fined $150 for not showing her e-transport card to an LTA officer in Ra.

In an interview with Fiji One News, Minister Tuisawau emphasized the need to prioritize pressing issues like road safety and the dangers of drinking and driving. He expressed concern over recent incidents that highlight these issues, including the viral video of an intoxicated man harassing a woman on a bus. Tuisawau has encouraged the public to take responsibility for ensuring passenger safety while using public transportation.

The Minister acknowledged that there have been technical issues with the machines used for topping up e-tickets and assured that improvements are on their way. He highlighted the importance of understanding the unique challenges faced by people in rural areas and the elderly, stating, “LTA needs to use common sense given that the issue now is those fatalities on the road, overspeeding, drunkardness, and careless driving.”

LTA CEO Irimaia Rokosawa addressed the public’s concerns, regarding the viral video and the enforcement of the Electronic Fare Ticketing regulations. He pointed out the positive aspects of the e-ticketing system but admitted to the challenges faced, especially in rural locations where access to top-up facilities is limited. He assured that the LTA is working to improve the system by engaging with stakeholders and enhancing recharge options across all areas.

Furthermore, the LTA is reviewing feedback to enhance the e-ticketing system’s functionality, while also re-evaluating its enforcement strategies to better serve the varying needs of the community. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka also weighed in, stating that while the LTA officer’s actions were in line with the law, a more reasonable application and resolution of such situations should be considered.

Overall, this reflects a positive step towards enhancing not only road safety but also the functionality of the public transportation system in Fiji.

In summary, the Minister’s call for common sense in law enforcement highlights the necessity for balance between regulation and practical considerations, aiming to improve safety measures and the e-ticketing system for all Fijians. This collaborative approach by the authorities could lead to a more user-friendly public transport experience and a safer travel environment.
