Lynda Tabuya, Fiji’s Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, is currently embroiled in controversy following the leak of a private video, which she confirms was meant for her husband. In her communications sent to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, various officials, and the media, Tabuya labeled this incident as a serious example of technology-enabled gender-based violence, an issue that affects a troubling two-thirds of women and girls in Fiji.

Tabuya emphasized that sharing private content between consenting adults is neither scandalous nor unlawful. Instead, she pointed fingers at the illegal actions of those who have obtained and disseminated her private videos, arguing that they are perpetuating a harmful culture of online violence. She highlighted that such acts of sextortion and revenge porn are crimes that endanger the dignity and safety of women.

In her statement, Tabuya condemned media outlets like Fijivillage for what she described as unethical reporting, maintaining that they failed to verify facts before publishing their story. She urged the Fiji Media Council to enforce ethical journalism standards.

Additionally, Tabuya disclosed that she is gathering evidence against those responsible for sharing the video, planning to pursue legal action under the Online Safety Act and Crimes Act. She issued a warning to others involved in the spread of the material, stressing that legal repercussions would follow.

The Prime Minister has reportedly reached out to Tabuya for clarification on the matter but had not provided comments at the time of the report.

This situation highlights the growing concern around online privacy and the need for protective measures against gender-based violence in Fiji. It brings to light essential conversations that can drive change and awareness surrounding these critical issues. With Tabuya standing firm in her position, it may catalyze further discussions on safeguarding the rights and dignity of women in similar circumstances across the country.
