Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua has decided to temporarily step down as investigations commence into the unauthorized issuance of passports to children in connection with human rights allegations associated with the Grace Road group.
Speaking from Australia, Mr. Tikoduadua stated, “The passports seem to have been issued without my knowledge, the Permanent Secretary’s approval, or authorization from senior Immigration Department management.” He characterized the situation as a serious violation of established protocols, prompting concerns about the internal controls within the department.
In light of the gravity of the matter and its potential impact on the nation’s integrity, Mr. Tikoduadua has launched an immediate investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the issuance of these passports and to ensure accountability within the system. To promote impartiality, he has offered to step aside during the investigation, a decision he has communicated to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
“I will fully cooperate and work to restore trust,” he affirmed, indicating his commitment to transparency and accountability as the inquiry unfolds.
This development highlights a proactive approach to governance, as Minister Tikoduadua seeks to address the issue head-on and reaffirm public trust in the government’s operations. By prioritizing transparency and accountability, there is hope that the investigation could lead to improved oversight and protocols within the immigration system, fostering a culture of integrity moving forward.
