Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua has publicly thanked Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for accepting his request to temporarily step down from his position as Immigration Minister. In a statement shared on his X account, Tikoduadua expressed his appreciation, emphasizing that his decision was aimed at facilitating a thorough investigation into recent allegations concerning unauthorized passports issued to children of individuals linked to the Grace Road human rights allegations.
Despite stepping aside from the Immigration role, Tikoduadua reaffirmed his commitment to his other duties, stating that he will continue to serve the Fijian people as Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs.
In response to the situation, Prime Minister Rabuka has reassigned the Immigration Department and the Fiji Police Force under his own portfolio, effective immediately. Tikoduadua retains his responsibilities for defence, veteran affairs, and oversight of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.
This situation highlights the importance of accountability and transparency within government operations. By allowing for an impartial investigation, both Tikoduadua and Rabuka demonstrate a commitment to ethical governance, reinforcing public trust.
In summary, Tikoduadua’s decision to step down temporarily may pave the way for a clearer understanding of the allegations, and it reflects a proactive approach to maintaining integrity in public service. This could ultimately lead to reforms that strengthen the immigration system and enhance the protection of human rights in Fiji.
