Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has reiterated the illegal status of corporal punishment in schools during his recent visit to Vanuabalavu in Lau. He emphasized that the Ministry of Education will not condone such practices, particularly in the outer islands. This declaration came while Mr. Radrodro was delivering essential educational resources to local schools, underscoring the critical role teachers play in nurturing students’ educational well-being.

“Corporal punishment is illegal and will not be tolerated in schools,” Mr. Radrodro stated, encouraging educators to cultivate a positive environment that promotes holistic learning. He also urged school heads to ensure their staff are satisfied and motivated, as happy teachers typically lead to more enthusiastic and engaged students.

During his tour, Mr. Radrodro visited several primary and secondary schools, including Daliconi Primary School and Adi Maopa Secondary School, where he engaged with teachers, students, and community members. His visit allowed him to gain insight into the unique challenges faced by maritime educational institutions, such as geographical isolation and declining student enrollment due to rural-urban migration.

The Minister’s strong stance on corporal punishment aligns with ongoing efforts highlighted in previous articles regarding the importance of child protection and positive disciplinary methods. In earlier discussions, the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission also condemned any form of physical punishment in schools, reinforcing the legal and ethical obligations to protect children.

The commitment to overall educational improvement reflects a broader ambition to enhance the academic landscape in Fiji, as Mr. Radrodro has consistently advocated for community involvement in fostering children’s education. He believes that with collective efforts from parents, educators, and local leaders, the educational standards in Fiji can be uplifted, paving the way for a brighter future for the students.

Overall, Minister Radrodro’s actions and messages bring a hopeful perspective to educational reform, striving not only for adherence to the law but also for nurturing a supportive and enriching learning environment for Fiji’s youth.
